As with many type of psychotherapies in the United Kingdom and Europe, it is not a regulated industry and because of this you can find varying quality of practitioners offering their services. There are many Hypnotherapy schools in the world and various organisations that certify therapists. The most important thing is to check that the therapist has received their qualification from a respected school and that the qualification is externally accredited (which means that it is not just the school that certifies them). You must also make sure that they are part of a voluntary regulatory organization. The largest such organizations in the UK are the GHR and the NCH. These bodies make sure that their members are kept to the highest professional and ethical standards. The therapist must also be dedicated to his or her own development professionally and personally. The most important thing, though, is that you feel comfortable with your therapist.
These are unfortunately other silly myths. You never lose control or consciousness and more often than not you will remember everything that goes on (this is why some people even think that they haven’t been hypnotized). You actually enter hypnosis many times a day without realizing it! If you ever feel uncomfortable in hypnosis, all you have to do is just count 1-2-3 and emerge easily.
Hypnosis cannot make you do something against your morals or ethics. The truth is all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and no one can make you do something that goes against your true values or judgement. With quitting smoking for example, you have to want the change, when you want change it is easy for me to help you, but you cannot be made to do something you don’t want to.
There are many myths about hypnosis thanks to Hollywood movies, urban legends and stage performers. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural process. As a trained and certified clinical hypnotherapist I simply act as a guide. The profound and positive benefits that come from doing the process all come from your ability to focus your mind. I help you learn how your mind works from the inside out and connect with the vast resources that already exist within you. That’s where the magic is.
Serious Psychiatric disorders such as those resulting in psychosis are always to be treated by a Psychiatrist. Medical problems to do with the physical body are always to be treated in conjunction with medical physicians and a good hypnotherapist will always ask for the patient to get their G.P or home doctor to sign a form asking for permission to work with the patient.
This is a question I get asked often. If I could control someone’s mind, don’t you think I would have already hypnotized some very rich person to give me all of his or her money? Seriously. No.
